Mass Effect 2

Publisher: Electronic Arts, Inc.
Developer: BioWare Corp.
Rating: "M" for Mature
26 JANUARI 2010

Overview

Two years after Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious new enemy has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced.

To even attempt this perilous mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy's most elite team and command the most powerful ship ever built. Even then, they say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them wrong.

Features

* Prepare for a suicide mission to save humanity
* Choose between 19 different weapons
* Devastating heavy weapons (that) can end a battle in seconds
* Recruit a team of the galaxy's most dangerous operatives
* Explore the galaxy — scan planets to uncover unique secret missions
* Train and equip your team to survive insurmountable odds
* Control your conversation with physical moments of intense action

ue to massive gameplay redesign, your level will not transfer over to Mass Effect 2 and you will start out with basic abilities. However, the game will acknowledge if you were a level 60 character and if you were a Renegade or Paragon and adapt it in ways that map across to the new system. Also, the physical appearance and class of imported characters can be changed at the start of the game, if desired.

Transfer of a Mass Effect Save file will allow the player to start with more experience, credits, mineral resources and Paragon or Renegade points depending on the previous Shepard's behavior and level.

If a player has no Mass Effect save files, Mass Effect 2 will start with an introduction sequence which, in combination with interactive decisions made by the player, introduces new players to the storyline and establishes a “canon” backstory.

Shepard's Fate

In Mass Effect 2, it is possible for Commander Shepard and members of his team to die at the conclusion of the game's final mission. Throughout the middle of the game the player will be building up the team, resources, information and ship necessary to succeed in the final mission. Should the player enter the final mission unprepared they could end up with an ending where Shepard dies, members of his team die, or there is a total bloodbath where everyone dies.

Should the player's Shepard die they will be unable to continue playing the game after the credits, and will be unable to import their character into Mass Effect 3. As with Shepard, death is final for all characters, and any that die during the ending will not be appearing in Mass Effect 3.

Silent Hill (サイレントヒル Sairento Hiru)

Silent Hill (サイレントヒル Sairento Hiru)

Silent Hill (サイレントヒル Sairento Hiru) is a survival horror video game franchise developed and published by Konami. The first four games in the series were created by Team Silent who have abandoned the series to work on other projects. Two additional titles have been made by other developers, Silent Hill: Origins by Climax Studios and Silent Hill: Homecoming by Double Helix. There are also a series of comics, books and novelizations based on the series. A film adaptation of the first game was released in 2006 directed by Christophe Gans. There is currently a second film based on the series under development.
The first three games of the series were released to strong sales and critical acclaim. Beginning with the release of Silent Hill 4: The Room, the critical reception and sales of the series began to decline.

The series is known for its complex storylines which are revealed through cinematic cut scenes and in-game notes. Each game unfolds like a movie with the player's actions determining which of several possible endings they receive. The series is also acclaimed for its detailed and disturbing environments and chilling soundtracks provided by composer Akira Yamaoka

Composer Akira Yamaoka has provided atmospheric and emotional music for every game in the series, ranging from gritty post-industrial to trip-hop and alternative rock pieces. Oftentimes in the Otherworld, music will play that is much louder than that of the fog world, making it harder to hear enemy presence and causing it to frighten the player. In addition, some environmental sound effects are included simply to frighten and alarm, rather than cause actual physical harm in the game (e.g., loud breathing or faint rustling in dark, empty hallways).
Beginning with Silent Hill 2, the series introduced the Noise Effect. It has become a staple in the series and is explained in the "Book of Lost Memory". The noise effect acts like a film grain filter, giving the game a constant sense of noise and presence, especially in the dark. This can severely inhibit the player's sight, as common objects such as pipes, walls, and posters can appear from far distances as monsters, and vice versa with distant monsters appearing as objects from a distance when not in motion. This effect has been expanded in Silent Hill 4 and Silent Hill Origins by causing noticeable increases when in the presence of monsters/spirits (even without the radio or flashlight on). This feature can often be shut off after completing the game once.

Borderlands

BorderlandsBorderlands is a fairly new game that came out in October of 2009. It was developed by Gearbox Software and designed for three systems; Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows. The game holds some amazing features that develop it into a role playing game. You can play alone or with up to two players on a screen split. The game can also be played online with up to four people.

The game begins as a first person shooting type game. The character is allowed to build on its skills and merit as it pursues through the role type playing game. Players can choose one of four characters there is the; Solder, Siren, Hunter and Beserker. And each character offers something different and unique to it as well as having its own special weapons.

Players earn rewards through gathering experience points and reward items. They earn points by killing foes and completing in game challenges and missions. As players gain experience they can specialize their skills and then future skill points can be allocated among the different specialized skills making them stronger.

At first characters have to walk around through their world but as time passes and the character becomes more experienced, they can eventually access two person vehicles and combat in vehicle to vehicle fights as they struggle with other foes. And eventually a fast transit system emerges between the worlds.

In combat a player can take damage if their shield is destroyed or depleted and it is affecting health. They can simply be revived by another player or attempt to kill a foe to achieve a second chance.

The game is started with players having two weapons but can eventually grow to four weapons as the game progresses. New weapons can be found either dropped by enemies, found in chests, sold at vendors or won as a reward for completing a mission.

The game uses a procedural content creation system to make weapons and items that can alter, fire power, role of fire and accuracy. A color coated scale is used to indicate type of weapon or item and its content. It is estimated that there are over 17 million variations of weapons available. It can also change the characteristics of various enemies that a player may face. That means that a specific species might be able to do varying things and have different abilities from each other that always keep you on your toes. Those features alone can make it very exciting for anyone playing the game.

When the game is being played on line, the game follows the host character while still rewarding other active players for completing missions. That way the host is always in control and can make the rules and instructions for mission choices. When playing with multiple players the game can automatically alter the state of generated enemies which help to balance out the game for all players.

The story line is fresh and exciting as players have to battle through a world and tackle missions as they pop up. The entire mission is based on finding a vault and keeping it safe as well as making sure that it stays closed forever. Many people love the way that they can begin as one character but then build on that person through personal achievements. The character from the beginning of the game will look much different toward the end as skills might have changed and weapons diversified.

King of Fighters Orochi Saga

 King of Fighters Orochi Saga

Where to begin with this compilation that's based around the King of Fighters series circa 1994 - 1998? Would it be best to start with a witty remark such as "SNK Playmore refuses to accept new century, prefers to live in the 90's"? Perhaps not... Because as much as it begrudges me to say this, this title's actually quite playable.

Taking the King of Fighters titles as a collective entity, there is a lot of value contained within, I discovered. Playing through what's called the 'Orochi Saga', starting with KoF '94, you can see how the series has taken steps to evolve over the yearly entries. Ranging from the preset teams to choose from in the '94 edition, to the ability to create your own in '95, and the overall awesomeness of the '98 edition, it seems SNK Playmore took notice year after year regarding what the fans wanted to see in the next edition. King of Fighters '95 might start with the message "The event shall be conducted as the previous one", implying the title is exactly the same as '94, but I actually discovered the experience surpasses it in spades. From the combat to the graphics, each year feels new compared to the prior, and when you add in the many, MANY different characters contained in each release then you have more reasons to replay. Even if you only play as Mai....

Another enjoyable experience was the 'Challenges' mode, where you have arbitrary goals to accomplish such as 'Win a battle blind - no energy bars etc."". It adds further replay value and unlocks content from across the titles such as secret characters, artwork and other in-game assets. Trying to clear all of the challenges will likely keep you going for days! I'm still playing through them when I have time, as time is a very important factor for this title as I shall now explain.

Things I didn't enjoy:

Loading Times:
UMD proves itself once more to be a thorn in the side of developers with regards to the PlayStation Portable. Getting from the main Title Select screen to an actual fight took exactly '1:02.05′. Long enough when you're playing a quick round or two and you end up waiting longer than a battle would normally last. Not only that, the load times between rounds were '6.7′ seconds long, again breaking up the flow of the combat. When a round can end in under 20 seconds for a REALLY good player this becomes a problem somewhat.

Bugs, glitches and errors.
There are random occasions when the sound just cuts out randomly. The fight announcer might start talking then stop mid sentence, the same applies to the in game music. I wonder if it has anything to do with the UMD format itself? Perhaps there was a flaw in the porting across process and they simply didn't want to spend money fixing it. Who knows? All I do know, however, is that the problem is not limited to my PSP; I spoke to one Adam Gulliver over on GameStyle, and he was just as confused as I was about the glitches. Graphically, the title maintains the charm of the series, but I do wish that a proper 16:9 screen format had been included, as the default 4:3 just seems like a waste of screen. Nit picking I know, but I want my whole screen to be filled with lovely pixels, not wildly stretched ones.

Outcome? Whilst I can only speak for myself, I found myself thinking early on in my experience with this title that if you go into the title expecting a Street Fighter II, you will come away disappointed. Expect something more technical, where luck and persistence have to be joined with skill and remembering the patterns of many fighters in order to succeed. Give it a try, folks. It's a great way to get ready for King of Fighters XII this summer. SNK Playmore - colour me interested!
